What is a Timestamp and How Does It Work?

The cryptographic foundations of mathematically proving that a file existed at a specific date without sharing its contents.

DOCUMENT TIMESTAMPED TIMESTAMP SHA-256 VERIFIED IMMUTABLE

Is it possible to mathematically prove that a file existed at a specific date without sharing its content? That is precisely what timestamping technology enables. A cryptographic timestamp verifiably proves that a file existed at a given moment and has not been altered since.

Why is a Timestamp Needed?

File creation, modification, or access dates on computers can easily be spoofed. Therefore, this metadata alone does not constitute legally or technically reliable evidence.

A timestamp, on the other hand, uses the file's cryptographic digest (hash) to independently record that the data existed at a specific date. Any subsequent tampering is immediately detected.

"The goal of timestamping is not to store your file, but to mathematically prove its existence at a specific moment."

How Does Homostamp Work?

Homostamp generates a timestamp using only your file's unique SHA-256 cryptographic digest, not the file itself. This ensures your file content is never shared with third parties and your privacy remains protected.

Once complete, you can safely store or permanently delete your file. The timestamp exists independently; verifying it only requires hashing the same file again.

Thanks to this approach:

  • Your file's privacy is preserved.
  • File contents are never stored on servers.
  • If the file is modified later, verification fails.
  • The created timestamp can be verified even years later.

Where is it Used?

Cryptographic timestamps are widely used as a reliable proof mechanism in:

  • Protecting software and source code,
  • Proving ownership of academic works,
  • Digital art and design assets,
  • Verifying AI-generated outputs,
  • Validating legal documents,
  • Archiving commercial contracts and reports

as an immutable proof mechanism.
